A shuttered spice stall makes Siru's scepter shake like never before, and chasing the stray cat who won't stop circling it drags her and a stranded Norwegian surveyor into a smuggling gang's crosshairs — with a rooftop fortune-teller cat as the only one who seems to know why.
In the Marrakech medina, tour guide Siru Agar's ancestral scepter is trembling harder than ever near a stall no one has opened in years, and marine surveyor Marcus Gray can't explain why his hands keep sketching the same alley. Chasing the same stray cat — Nuru — they collide, are marked by the stall's Sahara Shadows watchers, and are chased across rooftops and through a crowded square with Vivek tracking them from above. Cornered, they duck into Nuru's own street act, a sand-reading performance with a gnawa trio, and the song that follows is the only thing that gets them out alive. By the end Nuru has let Siru touch her for the first time, the scepter has answered something real — and the men who chased them have radioed a description of exactly who they saw.
