Siru Agar and Marcus Gray board Lisbon tram 28 because her scepter will not stop shaking, and they ride a runaway Alfama grade into Bassie's life: a tram driver who likes his route, his Thursday cards, and the city that loves him, and who will not be collected. The cut brakes are a flush — three more cars go dead, Carnac's harmonic rides Lisbon's iron, and the hillside Bassie's luck has been quietly holding begins to come down on a clock. Salugi walks into the depot's Thursday table in person, charming, already the regular, and offers Bassie the better life: stay, keep Lisbon lucky, let the others play gods. In the fado house, with the retaining wall cracking over their heads, Bassie sings the debt he owes people he has never met and chooses to come; the luck unhooks, the street falls, and Salugi lets them take the cat because four in one box was the point. On the last tram out of Lisbon the gathered luck becomes a beacon, Siru and Marcus drop into a vision they have not earned yet, and Salugi watches from the depot roof, pleased.
