The Long Way Out
As Earth's first civilians step through the newly-opened Bridge, an Umbrax data-theft turns the crossing into a structural collapse on both sides of the beam — and by the time the tremors stop, Siru and Marcus finally know exactly what they are, and exactly how much is still dark.
The pilot Bridge at Giza opens for its first civilian crossing, but an Umbrax operative under Javier Mendoza rides the beam's frequency to steal live crossing-signal data, cracking the ancient stone and stranding people mid-transit. Siru, Marcus, Vivek and Rakesh fight the sabotage hands-on and save the crossing — but not before the theft goes through, and the surge overloads Heliopoly's still-settling relay tower on the far side. On the rooftop above a cracking plaza, the found Good Luck Cats form the same circle they once stood in on an Earth rooftop years ago and sing the crossing steady. In the quiet after, Vivek hands Siru the master map of the eighteen Bridges — and the map answers back: something, somewhere, just used a stolen key to knock on a door that should still be dark.
